What is the ZSOM/Northwell Health Data Catalog?

The ZSOM/Northwell Health Data Catalog facilitates researchers discovery of data by providing a searchable and browsable online collection of datasets. Rather than functioning as a data repository, the catalog is a directory for researchers who are looking for datasets relevant to their work. It includes datasets that have been generated by ZSOM/Northwell Health researchers as well as publicly available and licensed datasets that are created by external organizations, e.g. the US National Survey of Children's Health.

How do I use the ZSOM/Northwell Health Data Catalog?

As a researcher, you may search or browse for datasets and their creators in multiple ways.

If I am submitting a grant and would like to include the Data Catalog in my Data Management Plan, do you have sample language?

If you are writing a grant and plan to share your data (via a public repository, lab hosted server, by request, etc.) and make it discoverable with the ZSOM Data Catalog, below is sample language that can be inserted into your data sharing plan or the data sharing section of your data management plan.

  • Data from this project will be described with rich metadata in the ZSOM Data Catalog (https://datacatalog.medicine.hofstra.edu) to increase findability and usefulness of the datasets.

Or

  • Data from this project will be described in the ZSOM Data Catalog (https://datacatalog.medicine.hofstra.edu) with rich metadata (including: description, keywords, format of dataset, instrumentation or software utilized/required, and information about who can access each dataset and how) to increase findability and usefulness of datasets.
Who controls the data in the catalog?

Each dataset is controlled by an individual, research team, or institution who may establish different rules regarding access to the data. Dataset managers will be listed as Authors or Publishers in the catalog record. Access Restrictions are also listed under each catalog entry.

What is the scope of the ZSOM/Northwell Health Data Catalog?

The ZSOM/Northwell Health Data Catalog indexes research products generated by researchers across all ZSOM/Northwell Health institutions as well as publicly-available data which may be of interest to ZSOM/ Northwell Health researchers in the health sciences. Records in the ZSOM/Northwell Health Data Catalog will support at least one of the following use cases:

  • Community resource development
  • Learning and teaching

How can I list my dataset in the catalog?

To have your dataset included in the ZSOM/Northwell Health Data Catalog, you must be a ZSOM/Northwell Health researcher. Is the ZSOM/Northwell Health Data Catalog only visible to ZSOM/Northwell Health researchers?

The ZSOM/Northwell Health Data Catalog is a publicly available resource and dataset records may appear in search engines, including Google Dataset Search. However some the actual data described in the catalog may only be available to ZSOM/Northwell Health researchers.
