New York City Health and Nutrition Examination Study

The NYC Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NYC HANES), modeled on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), is a population-based, cross-sectional study with data colleced from physical examinations, clinical and laboratory tests, as well as face-to-face interviews and audio computer-assisted self-interviews (ACASI). It was first conducted in 2004 by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) in 2004 and again in 2013-2014 by the City University of New York School of Public Health and NYC DOHMH jointly. Participants in both rounds of collection are non-institutionalized adults, 20 years or older. NYC HANES focuses on chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and depression.

The NYC HANES data is freely available on their website and consists of the following 6 datasets: SPfile (Study Participant File); CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interview) ; ACASI (Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interview); CIDI (Composite International Diagnostic Interview); EXAM; and LABS. The website provides information on the data release documentation, data structure, and analytic guidelines. Each data file (downloadable in SAS), is accompanied by a variable list, data documentation, and codebook. Information about SAS formats and SAS sample code is also available.
